Right when I had just moved to New York in the Fall of 2022, I was confused by the seating pattern on the subway. Next to every person sitting on the 6 train, there was a big patch of orange - an empty seat. People still left each alternative seat vacant - not squishing too close together. From where I came from, I'd see one and a half person on one seat. New York being a crowded city could have used some of that. What did the pandemic do to our seating habits? What changed in the way we commuted on the subway before the pandemic and after the pandemic?  In this story, I take a look at social norms on the subway.

Reported in September 2022. Subway ridership has changed significantly since.
