Simone Barros is a freelance audio and film producer. She wanted to make films since she was 15. And she genuinely believed filmmakers made money. But in her 20s she went from these high moments to low moments worrying about if she was going to make it? Will she have food in the fridge? Can she eat cereal with water instead of milk because spending money on milk felt too much? She asked for a Roth IRA as a Christmas present. This is a story told in Simone's voice. She talks about her life as a freelancer and the eerie uncertainties of money. As she lived a life of scarcity, her definition of "making it" in life kept changing.
I made this episode as a fellow at NYU's Wasserman Center. Through this podcast, All in a Day's Work, the Wasserman Center tries to bring in alumni to talk about their experiences with current students. As someone curious about the freelancer lifestyle, I reached out to Simone with the questions I had. You can also listen to it on Spotify/wherever you get your podcasts.
