She loved taking her girlfriends out on a trip to the hills. When driving, she felt she was in-charge of her own life. She earned for her family. However, all of this came at a cost. She got into arguments with her father. In this story, a look at how Komal defied societal norms, sometimes failing and sometimes succeeding.

A Village that Forewarned the Government about a Dam that Broke Loose

During the 1920s and 1930s, Reini, a village in India started the Chipko Movement. During this movement, women hugged the trees, essentially saying that before anyone wants to chop off the trees, they will have to chop off the women hugging these trees. More recently, in 2021, a flood struck this same village and surrounding areas when a dam broke. The villagers had warned the government about building this dam. In this story, I spoke to Kalawati Devi, one of the women who started the Chipko movement and warned the government about the dam construction.

The Migrant Workers Exodus in India

When the COVID19 lockdown was first announced, it started an exodus in India. As a result of the lockdown, people panicked. The most affected were the daily wage workers who had migrated from small villages in India to make a living in big cities like Delhi and Bombay. They walked for days on end. Many never made it home. Even at a conservative estimate of around 30 million, this was the largest internal migration in recent human history. From one of the finest poets in India, this is a poem dedicated to all the migrant workers.
