WHY POLICE BRUTALITY CONTINUES IN INDIA: AN EXPLAINER


On June 22, a father and son, Jayaraj (59 years) and Benicks (31 years) died in police custody in Tamil Nadu, India. Jayaraj and Benicks were arrested for violating the COVID19 lockdown rules and keeping their store open for longer than permitted hours. Later, reports emerged that the father-son due was tortured and sexually assaulted while in police custody. They died as a result of the injuries. This is an explanatory report on Police Brutality in India and why it continues to persist. According to official data, India recorded 1,723 cases of custodial deaths from January to December 2019. Out of these 1,606 deaths took place in judicial custody and 117 deaths took place in police custody.

A GANG RAPE SURVIVOR AND HER STRUGGLE WITH THE INDIAN JUDICIARY 
On February 9, 2019, a young girl was gang raped by 9 men and 1 juvenile boy in Punjab, India. The key accused, Jagroop Singh, was granted bail on December 22, 2020. According to the Police, he confessed to gang raping 12-13 women. Jagroop admitted that he gang raped a woman on every weekend of January 2019. In this story, the survivor speaks about rebuilding her life and the struggles of fighting a court case.

When this story was reported, the case was still ongoing under the Indian judicial system. As of today, as a result of the survivor's courage, 6 of the 9 accused are behind bars.
